Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains what Recap ("Recap," "we," "us") collects when you use the ^recap app, how we use it, who can see it, and the choices you have. ^recap is only for people 21 and older.
1. The short version
- We collect what you give us to run the app: your account details, the nights you recap, and what you post.
- Your cards are social by design. What you post is visible to other ^recap users according to your privacy settings.
- We don't sell your personal information, we don't show ads, and the app contains no third-party analytics or advertising trackers.
- The app never reads your device's GPS. The bars on a card are bars you picked yourself.
- You can delete any card, and you can delete your entire account from Settings at any time.
2. Information you give us
Account. When you create an account we collect your email address and a password. Your password is handled by our authentication provider and stored only in hashed form, so we can't see it. You choose a user ID (handle), and you can add a display name, a motto, and a profile photo.
Gender. At sign-up we ask whether you're a man, a woman, or prefer not to say. We use this for one thing: the crowd ratio shown on bar pages, which is calculated from the people who recapped nights there. Your gender isn't shown on your profile or your cards. If you choose "Prefer not to say," you're left out of ratio calculations entirely.
Birthday. We ask for your birthday at sign-up only to confirm you're 21 or older. The check happens on your device. Your birthday is not sent to us or stored.
Your nights. When you recap a night we collect your answers to the questionnaire. Depending on the night, these can include: the bars and venues you went to, or that you stayed in; food and entertainment ratings and types; which kinds of drinks you had and how buzzed you got; your hangover; the vibe of the night; whether you were with friends and which friends you tagged; whether you talked to your crush; how far things went romantically ("bases"); whether the night was worth it; a caption; and a photo, if you add one. We use your answers to calculate your score and badges and to build your card.
Sensitive answers. Some of these answers concern alcohol use and your romantic life, which some laws treat as sensitive information. We use them only to provide the features you submit them for, and we never sell them. By answering and posting, you consent to that use. Only share what you're comfortable having on your card.
Social activity. We collect the comments you write, the cards you like, your friend requests and friendships, the people you block, your bar lists (favorites and wishlist), and the reports you file, including the reason you chose and a copy of the reported content (up to 1,000 characters) so we can review it.
Settings. We store your privacy choices, such as whether your account is private and whether you appear as a suggested friend.
Messages to us. If you email us, we keep the conversation so we can help you.
3. Information collected automatically
Technical information. Our hosting providers process the technical information needed to run and secure the service, such as your IP address, device and operating system type, the requests the app makes, and when they were made.
Map tiles. The map is drawn from tiles your device downloads directly from Esri's ArcGIS service. Like any web request, this shares your IP address and the area of the map you're viewing with Esri. We don't send Esri your account information.
Photo details. Photos you upload are stored as your device provides them, which can include embedded details such as when the photo was taken and, if your camera records it, where. If you don't want locations stored in your photos, turn off location tagging for your camera in your device settings.
Reminders. Morning reminders are scheduled on your device by the app itself. No notification token or device identifier is sent to us for them.
What we don't collect. We don't collect your precise location, your contacts, or advertising identifiers, and we don't track you across other companies' apps or websites.
4. How we use information
- To run ^recap: accounts, scoring, cards, feeds, profiles, friends, comments, and likes.
- To build bar pages: recaps are combined into statistics such as average scores and ratings, popularity, and the crowd ratio. These statistics don't name the people behind them.
- To keep ^recap safe: reviewing reports, enforcing our Terms of Service, keeping the app 21+, and preventing abuse.
- To contact you about your account, such as email confirmation and password resets, and to reply when you write to us.
- To send morning reminders on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, if you allow notifications.
- To fix problems, improve the app, and comply with the law.
We don't use your information for advertising.
5. Who can see what
Your cards. If your account is public, any signed-in ^recap user can see your cards. A card shows your handle, the venues, your score, badges, caption, photo, and tagged friends, plus a stats panel with your buzz, entertainment, food, and hangover ratings, your vibe, bases, a drinks count, and your crew size. New cards appear in feeds until midnight Central Time, then stay on your profile until you delete them.
Private accounts. If you turn on Private account in Settings, only your friends can see your cards, bar lists, and badges. Your handle, name, motto, and profile photo stay visible so people can find and add you.
Tags and comments. If a friend tags you on their card, your handle appears on it for anyone who can see that card. Comments are visible to anyone who can see the card they're on.
Photo links. Photos are delivered from long, hard-to-guess web links. Anyone who has a photo's link can open it, even if your account is private. Don't post a photo you wouldn't want shared.
Bar pages and the map show statistics combined from many recaps. They don't list who recapped a night there.
6. How we share information
We use service providers that process information on our behalf: Supabase, which provides our database, authentication, file storage, and hosting; Resend, which sends our account emails, such as email confirmations and password resets; Cloudflare, which hosts our website; and Esri, which serves map tiles as described above.
We may disclose information if the law requires it, to protect the safety of any person, to investigate fraud or abuse, or to enforce our Terms of Service. If Recap is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, information may transfer as part of that deal, and this policy will continue to apply to it. We may also share information when you ask us to.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for targeted or cross-context behavioral advertising.
7. How long we keep it
- Account information is kept for as long as your account exists.
- Cards stay on your profile until you delete them or your account. Leaving the feed at midnight does not delete a card.
- When you delete your account in Settings, we permanently erase your profile, nights, photos, comments, likes, friends, and bar lists. Copies may remain in backups for a limited period until they're overwritten, and we may keep limited records where the law requires it or to handle safety reports.
8. Your choices and rights
- Edit your name, user ID, and motto in Settings, and change your photo from your profile.
- Delete any of your cards, comments, or likes.
- Make your account private, and choose whether you appear as a suggested friend.
- Block anyone. Blocked people can't see your nights or comments, and you can't see theirs.
- Turn notifications, photo, and camera access on or off in your phone's Settings app.
- Delete your account from Settings at any time.
Depending on where you live, including California, Texas, and other US states, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or get a copy of your personal information, and to appeal our decision on a request. To make a request, email recaplegal@outlook.com. We may need to verify your identity, we'll respond within the time the law requires, and we won't treat you differently for using these rights.
9. Security
Information travels between the app and our servers encrypted over HTTPS, and our database enforces access rules so each account can read only what it's allowed to see. No system is perfectly secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security. Keep your password private and tell us right away if you think your account has been compromised.
10. Age requirement
^recap is only for people 21 and older. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 21. If we learn an account belongs to someone under 21, we delete it. You can report an underage user from their profile with "Someone here is under 21," or by emailing recaplegal@outlook.com.
11. Where information is processed
Recap is based in the United States. Your information is processed and stored in the United States and in other places where our service providers operate.
12. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the effective date above. If a change is significant, we'll tell you in the app before it takes effect.
